Is Nintendo Planning To Finally Localize Mother 3 For The West?
Originally released back in 2006 for the Game Boy Advance, the title was never released outside of Japan, despite the previous game in the series having been released in the West under the name of EarthBound.
Rumors started swirling yesterday when long time Nintendo follower and journalist Emily Rogers made a tweet that said “Don’t be surprised if Nintendo celebrates a game’s 10th anniversary this year”. Her account has now been deleted.
This could have just been brushed off once again, but now Eurogamer says their source has been saying the same exact thing. A classic like Mother 3 deserves to be shared with the whole world through every avenue possible, though it appears Nintendo would rather breathe some life into the otherwise quiet Wii U release schedule for 2016. But given the success of Ness and Lucas as amiibo and Smash characters, and how Earthbound apparently “sold out” of digital copies on Club Nintendo a year ago, it’s easy to see how Mother 3 would succeed in the west. We’ve only had fan translations of the game up to now. As the cliche goes: when there’s smoke, there’s Mother 3. I was told the release is finally happening – via Wii U Virtual Console – to celebrate Mother 3’s 10th anniversary of release in Japan.
