Is the Force with China? Star Wars heads for record
While the new figure has not been released by Disney media just yet, we do know that The Force Awakens peaked at $758.2 million on Tuesday. Even if The Force Awakens pops in that last remaining territory (and the second-largest movie market in the world), it may fall short of Avatar’s world-wide record by several hundred million dollars.
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is being heralded as the highest box office grossing film of all time in North America.
While the feat by “Star Wars” is impressive, it still has a way to go catch up to “Avatar’s” worldwide box office tally of $2.78 billion.
J.J. Abrams has taken the helm of the popular Star Wars franchise, and proven he can make a hit with the fans.

It also smashed the record for the biggest box office debut weekend globally – when it opened on 16 December, in most countries – with ticket sales of $529m.
“Avatar” earned almost $750 million during its original seven-month release in 2009, plus another $10 million or so during a re-release. “The Force Awakens” has earned $1.6 billion to date, as compared to “Avatar’s” $2.8 billion.
At present, Star Wars: The Force Awakens ranks as the 21 against classic films such as “E.T.”, “Titanic”, “The Sound of Music”, and “The Extra Terrestrial”. It is also expected to beat Avatar’s record in worldwide gross sales since time memorial for any movie featured. While final numbers for Wednesday are still not in as of Thursday morning, they push “Star Wars” past the total domestic gross for “Avatar”.
