Is Usain Bolt going to be in the 2016 Rio Olympics?
In fact, as of Friday evening, she now IS the best after breaking the world record with a time of 12.20 seconds at the Diamond League meet in London’s Stadium at Queen Elizabeth Park.
The six-time Olympic champion ran home in 19.89 seconds – 0.15 secs ahead of Panama’s Alonso Edward in second.
The hamstring concern which caused his withdrawal from the Jamaican Olympic trials meant Bolt still had to convince the selectors that all was okay with their sprint superstar.
The world’s fastest man will aim to become the first person to win the 100m and 200m double at three consecutive Games when he will feature in the Rio Olympics.
“I wasn’t that impressed”, said Bolt. “The key thing is I came out injury-free, so I’m happy about that”. As we noted at the time, Harrison’s 12.62 at the Trials was her second-slowest mark of the year (only her 12.66 in disgusting conditions in Stockholm was slower) and it went down as her only defeat of the year in a final (she was also second in her prelim at the Trials). “So I really want to try to go after the 200-meter world record this year”.
But a virtually faultless performance from gun to tape indicated her determination to make a point on the recently laid super-fast Mondo track that is identical in all but colour to the blue version that will be used in next month’s Rio Olympics.
Jamaican Usain Bolt will defend his 100m and 200m crown in Rio, taking on his closest rival American Justin Gatlin in the shorter distance.
But what has not altered is Bolt’s supremacy on this track, and in his sport. Bolt will once again compete in these three track and field events at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio as he looks to race off into the sunset with another three medals for his Olympic accolades. The clamour to congratulate him went on for quite some time as he embarked on an extended lap of honour, much to the delight of those who had stayed behind to greet him.
Fellow Canadian Akeem Haynes also failed to reach Friday’s final after clocking 10.24 in the second heat.
“It is always great to come back here to London and compete, it is a lot of fun”. It’s Kelly Holmes Olympic gold medal record. “It’s great to have”.
“Amazing run”, tweeted Holmes. “Records are there to be broken“.
Bolt’s race in Friday’s 200m will be his last outing before his final Olympics.
Further back there was a season’s best of 1.92m for Morgan Lake in seventh.
Britain’s 4x100m relay runners kicked off the event in style by breaking their own British record.
Britons Emily Diamond, Seren Bundy-Davies and Anyika Onuora were seventh, eighth and ninth respectively.
Choose which celebrity you’d like help from in the new Couch to 5K programme, designed for people who have done little or no running.
Eilidh Doyle had to settle for fourth in the women’s 400m hurdles as fastest in the field, Dalilah Muhammad, showed her current top form to win in 53.90. I’m happy with the execution and hopefully my coach is.
Frenchman Jimmy Vicaut won in 10.02 ahead of American Isiah Young with 10.07 seconds and European champion Churandy Martina of the Netherlands third in 10.10.
There was a more muted celebration for Bolt, who nevertheless delighted the crowd by winning then spending his usual remarkable amount of time signing autographs, posing for photos and giving endless media interviews.
