Israel carries out airstrike on Gaza after rocket fired into southern Israel
The IDF said in a statement that it would not tolerate attempts to harm Israeli citizens.
Judges ruled Thursday that Bensouda made “material errors in her determination of the gravity” of the case.
The file photo shows Turkish-flagged Mavi Marmara. Last year, deadly fighting between both sides left more than 2,200 Palestinians dead as well as 73 Israelis as the countries exchanged rocket fire. “Against this hypocrisy our soldiers will continue to protect us in the field and we will defend them in the global arena”.
The tiny Indian Ocean island state in January asked the Hague-based ICC’s judges to review Bensouda’s decision.
The Foreign Ministry response to the overall decision at the time was: “Israel takes positive note of the decision by the Prosecutor of the worldwide Criminal Court (ICC) to close The Preliminary Examination into the Flotilla (Mavi Marmara)”.
Nine Turkish nationals died when Israeli commandos staged a botched pre-dawn raid on a six-ship flotilla seeking to bust Israel’s naval blockade of the Gaza Strip on May 31, 2010. A number of Turkish nationals were killed in the operation.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu slammed the judges’ decision saying they were motivated by “cynical politics” adding that the Israeli commandos reacted to keep Israel safe. “The actions of global officials against Israel and its soldiers in the name of the “law” or “human rights” are what is truly damaging the world order”. “It doesn’t matter how you try to change the story, there is one truth that has already been determined”, said Hatnuah Chairwoman Tzipi Livni. Next, the majority put heavy emphasis on alleged inhuman treatment, torture and cover- up of war crimes by the IDF in how it handled Mavi Marmara passengers after they were detained.
Yesh Atid head Yair Lapid said that the ICC “proved today that it is a hypocritical institution that is tainted by anti-Semitism and hatred for Israel”.
