Israel demolish Jerusalem home of Palestinian who killed 2 police officers
Over the past two months, unrest has surged, with nearly daily stabbings, vehicle rammings and shootings by Palestinians, which have killed 19 Israelis and one US citizen.
In July, a firebomb was thrown into the Dawabsheh family’s home in the West Bank village of Duma, where four family members were asleep.
Shortly afterward, the boy’s parents, Saad Dawabsheh and Riham Dawabsheh, both succumbed to severe burns they sustained in the attack, which received wide media coverage and sparked worldwide outrage.
Seventeen-year-old Mohamed Abu Khdeir was burnt to death by his abductors in a suspected “revenge” attack by Jewish settlers following the murder weeks earlier of three Israeli settlers in the West Bank.
In return, 20 Israelis were killed in stabbing and running over attacks carried out by Palestinians.
The arson drew renewed attention to Jewish extremism and accusations that Israel had not done enough to address the problem. At least 102 Palestinians have been killed, including 67 said by Israel to be attackers.
A wave of violence erupted on October 1 and has so far claimed the lives of more than 120 people, including 105 Palestinians and 17 Israelis.
According to the reports, Israeli forces blocked entries to the refugee camp, fired tear gas at Palestinians and set off stun grenades.
In addition, an American student was killed in a Palestinian attack and an Eritrean migrant was shot dead by an Israeli security guard after he was mistakenly identified as an attacker.
Tensions have also been stoked by disputes over access to a Jerusalem holy site revered by Jews and Muslims and other issues at the heart of the now-frozen Israeli-Palestinian peace process, from failed negotiations to Israeli settlements on occupied land that Palestinians seek for a independent state.
Last month, Israel renewed a policy of demolishing homes of Palestinians accused of carrying out deadly attacks.
The demolitions are a part of a series of punitive measures being carried out by the Israel to “deter” future attacks.
