Israel, Jordan deal with diplomatic crisis after embassy attack
The guard killed his 17-year-old assailant and a bystander after being stabbed in the chest with a screwdriver on Sunday evening.
Israel frequently razes or seals attackers’ homes as a deterrent, although rights groups say this amounts to collective punishment.
A Jordanian doctor, who owned the building where the attack took place, was hit by a stray bullet during the incident and died of his injuries.
The head of the Israel Security Agency, or Shin Bet, Nadav Argaman, travelled Monday to Jordan in an effort to diffuse the crisis.
The police statement said the two Jordanians had gone into the building to carry out “carpentry work”.
Israel’s Foreign Ministry did not refer to such demands in its statement, but said the guard has diplomatic immunity, according to worldwide conventions. This was nothing more than a criminal incident.
Shortly afterwards Israel began removing security infrastructure around a key holy site in Jerusalem.
The government source said an initial investigation indicated that Jawawdeh and the security guard “fell out over some dispute which led to a stabbing and a shooting”.
In response, Israel installed metal detectors at the site, a move that incensed the Muslim world.
In a CNN interview the day before, Safadi said: “Jordan acted legally and morally [by complying to worldwide laws on diplomatic missions]”. “I demand that the government and foreign office take action under the law, because my son was a Jordanian citizen for all intents and purposes”.

Trump’s Mideast envoy, Jason Greenblatt, met with Netanyahu in Jerusalem on Monday in the administration’s first high-level, on-the-ground engagement in the crisis.
The security measures were implemented by Israel after Arab gunmen opened fire from inside the shrine, killing two police officers. Palestinians view the tougher security measures as Israel asserting further control over the site.
