Israel To Hold Jewish Militants Without Trial
“On Tu B’Av, the festival of love, when around us we are seeing more and more displays of hatred and violence that make us all cringe, we must love and respect each other”, he wrote, according to Israeli daily newspaper Haaretz. “From what we’ve seen until today it doesn’t look like the prime minister has the necessary determination to deal with this and that is a great shame because it can set the whole region on fire”, Mr Zohar said.
An Israeli court Tuesday ordered the head of a Jewish extremist group to be kept in detention after his arrest following the burning to death of a Palestinian baby, judicial sources said. The cases included shootings, beatings, arson, theft and vandalism, attempted land seizures and attacks on mosques. The attackers fled the scene. On Sunday, he spoke of “zero tolerance” for such acts.
Administrative detention – incarceration without trial – is increasingly used by world governments to combat the threat of terror, when there is not enough evidence against a suspect to justify a criminal trial.
“This [attack] is due to the authorities’ policy to avoid enforcing the law on Israelis who harm Palestinians and their property”.
“A nation whose children were burned in the Holocaust must do a lot of soul-searching if it bred people who burn other humans”, said Israeli Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan in response to the day’s news.
But, Ettinger wrote on his blog before being arrested, there are “lots and lots of Jews, many more than one might think” who may have carried out the attacks.
Israel faced mounting pressure on Sunday to crack down on Jewish extremists after a firebombing that killed a Palestinian child and the stabbing of six Gay Pride marchers drew widespread outrage. This kind of negligence is meant to give the upper hand to the Israeli occupation forces to kill more Palestinians and this is not logic.
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said condemnations were not enough and that steps must be taken against the terrorists, claiming as long as he is alive, he will make sure Israelis are not attacked. But isn’t the belief that Israel will force hundreds of thousands of settlers to leave the occupied West Bank just as utopian? Ettinger is also the grandson of the late Rabbi Meir Kahane, an ultranationalist whose party was banned from Israel’s parliament for its racist views in 1988.
Yet Ettinger, who has a restraining order that prevents him from being in Jerusalem and the West Bank, denied that he was involved in the group.
Ettinger has denied main an extremist motion.
The Shin Bet spokesman said Ettinger was in January barred from entering the West Bank or Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem for a whole year “because of his activities”.
Police spokeswoman Luba Samri said the attack was probably nationalistically motivated because police found the words “price tag” on one of the houses.
