Israeli airstrike hits Hamas sites after Gaza rocket attacks
The last public executions in Gaza took place during the most recent war with Israel in 2014, when a firing squad from Hamas’s armed wing killed six men.
Abd Al-Rahim said their win highlighted the fact that the Palestinian people were one step closer to establishing statehood, and emphasized that Palestinians would never compromise on their vision of that state.
“We have serious doubts as to whether capital trials in Gaza meet [fair trial] standards”, said Rupert Colville in Geneva.
A couple of times in his speech Abd Al-Rahim reiterated the notion that Israel was destined to crumble.
“Palestinians in Gaza are growing ever more desperate, seeing their prospects for living a normal life and recovering their economy blocked by Hamas’s military build-up, by Israel’s security measures and closures, by the lack of Palestinian unity, and the insufficient fulfilment of aid pledges by donors”, Nickolay Mladenov said.
He told the Council that after two tunnels were discovered, “Israel carried out 14 incursions into Gaza in order to destroy them and seek out others”.
The decision was announced in a statement from parliament members in Gaza, but it was unclear how many lawmakers of the Hamas-dominated Palestinian Legislative Council were in attendance or how they claimed the authority to rule.
COGAT, which sits within the Ministry of Defense and oversees Israel’s government in the West Bank and policies vis-à-vis the Gaza Strip, applied the import freeze after accusing Hamas of using some of the cement to build tunnels.
Hamas Attorney-General, Ismail Jabber said that five convicts sentenced to death would be executed next week, while another eight would be executed after the Muslim holy fasting month of Ramadan in July.
During a 2014 war with Israel, Hamas carried out the extrajudicial killings of 23 alleged spies. The Palestinian Center for Human Rights calls for abolition of capital punishment.
It said that the Palestinian legislations should be coherent with all global agreements and human rights treaties, signed by the Palestinian Authority, including the complete abolition of Capital Punishment. “The street wants the death penalty, people who had relatives killed want it”.
