Israeli army: Palestinian gunman shot dead after wounding 2
Alawi – married with one child – was one of five Palestinians to be imprisoned on October 3 after Israel’s internal security service, Shin Bet, said the five confessed to involvement in the October 1 attack during interrogation that took place shortly after.
It said in a statement that the detainees were being questioned over the July 31 firebombing in the West Bank village of Duma, located near the Jordan Valley and close to wildcat Jewish settlements. Ali Dawabsha, the family’s 18-month old son, died in the attack; his parents, Saad and Riham, succumbed to their injuries in Israeli hospitals in the aftermath of the attack. The only survivor, four-year-old Ahmed, is still hospitalized at the Sheba Medical Center in central Israel.
Israeli forces demolished a Palestinian-owned home in Nablus.
It did not say if the man was a soldier or civilian or disclose any other details.
Since mid-September, 19 people have been killed on the Israeli side from Palestinian stabbings, shootings and vehicular attacks.
Israeli leaders pledged after the Dawabsheh toddler’s death to crack down on violent far-right Jewish groups, and the government made a decision to start detaining without trial Israeli citizens suspected of political violence against Palestinians. He was shot dead at the scene.
Several young Palestinian men also hurled Molotov cocktails and empty bottles on the invading armored Israeli military vehicles, and the army fired dozens of gas bombs, concussion grenades and live rounds.
The attack led to widespread condemnation globally as well as by Israelis and Palestinians, but no one has been charged for the killings.
Israeli occupation forces demolished the home of Ragheb Olaiwi early Thursday morning in Nablus, the largest town in the northern West Bank. Investigators confirmed in a statement that members of a “Jewish terror group” had been arrested in connection with the July arson attack.
Israel says home demolition is an effective tool to deter attacks, but critics say the tactic amounts to collective punishment.
