Israeli group seeks referendum on Palestinians
A Palestinian man has been shot and killed by Israeli security forces after he was suspected of attempting to ram police down in East Jerusalem’s Shuafat refugee camp.
Officers opened fire on the vehicle as it sped towards the guards in the Shuafat refugee camp, killing one of the men in the auto and seriously injuring another, the police said. Nimir was hit by the hail of bullets aimed at his vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The wounded suspect, a 25-year-old man, sustained an injury to his thigh and was taken in light-to-moderate condition to Hadassah Mount Scopus hospital.
Elsewhere, Palestinian medical sources have reported that Israeli soldiers shot and injured, on Monday at dawn, three Palestinians in the Balata refugee camp, and Sebastia town, in the northern West Bank district of Nablus. He was apparently unarmed, but did not heed the soldiers’ repeated orders to halt.
“In the wake of destructive attacks coming from your area against civilians, the Israeli defense forces and the Israeli security forces will operate with increased effort against terrorists and against anyone involved in such activity”, the warning read.
A wave of violence started last October in which 220 Palestinians, 34 Israelis, two Americans, an Eritrean and a Sudanese have died, according to an AFP count.
Though Israeli media first reported Badran as a “terrorist” who had been throwing stones, he was later revealed to be an innocent bystander to the incident.
The forces responded by firing at the vehicle after the auto ignored their warnings, said the police statement.
