Israeli troops kill 2 Palestinians after stabbing attempts
The court delayed the verdict for the third and chief suspect in the case due to a last-minute insanity plea, sparking claims that Israel is too lenient with Jewish assailants.
Mohammad Abu Khdeir’s death was allegedly a nationalist revenge murder following the deaths of three Jewish teenagers in the West Bank a month before. Their names were not released under Israeli law.
Israeli Occupation Forces Saturday kidnapped 29 Palestinians including 15 from al-Khalil, 5 from Ramallah and Bireh, 1 from Occupied Jerusalem and 5 from Bethlehem including the mother of two prisoners.
It would be hard for Israel to block funding for European Union projects in towns and villages under Palestinian Authority control, but plans for the West Bank’s “Area C”, where the Israeli military is exclusively in charge, could be another matter. “I’m afraid that the court will eventually get them off the hook”, he was quoted as saying by the Israeli newspaper Haaretz. Although they evaded capture for several months, Amer Abu Aysha and Marwan Kawasme were eventually shot and killed by Israeli forces. One teenager promised as Abu Khdeir was burned to death, he remained in the vehicle.
They added that the Israeli police intensified their presence in and around the Old City and the Aqsa Mosque following two stabbing attacks in the morning in Jerusalem and embarked on searching Palestinian passersby, especially the young men. The confrontation escalated into a 50-day war in which more than 2,200 Palestinians, the majority of them civilians, were killed, according to United Nations figures.
Two minors have been found guilty of the kidnapping and murder of Palestinian teen Mohammed Abu Khdeir.
Nonetheless, six Jewish Israeli suspects were arrested a few days later in connection with Abu Khdeir’s murder, three of whom were eventually put on trial. Speaking to the the International Business Times from the family home in Shuafat, East Jerusalem she said, “I was in shock when the verdict was announced in court, I am still in shock now – I can’t really express it”.
The two minors found guilty say they were involved only in the abduction of Abu Khdeir, not the killing.
Mohammed’s murder led to outbreaks of violence across the region and contributed to the outbreak of the Israel-Gaza war on July 6.
Al Jazeera’s Stefanie Dekker, reporting from East Jerusalem, said there was a lot of anger among Palestinians over how the court had handled the case.
A Palestinian brandishing a knife attempted to stab a pedestrian at a junction near the settlement bloc and was shot dead by an Israeli soldier, police and the army said. The Palestinians said the violence is rooted in frustration over a lack of hope for obtaining independence. He said life sentences would be the only fair judgement for the three men who killed his son.
