#IStandWithAhmed: 14-Year-Old Tech Whiz Gets Support From Facebook, Twitter
Among the outpouring of sympathy was a message from Obama inviting Ahmed to bring his clock to the White House, an offer that the teenager said he would accept this evening.
A Texan high school student was arrested after authorities mistook his clock invention for a fake bomb at MacArthur high school in Irving, Texas. He presented the clock to his teacher whom he had wanted to impress but instead got taken in by the police as the teacher thought that it was a bomb.
Ahmed Mohamed was arrested on Wednesday (September 16) for bringing his homemade clock into school.
Obama has also invited Ahmed to the White House, an invitation that Ahmed has eagerly accepted.
Among the supporters who took to Twitter to voice their support for Mohamed were celebrities, engineers, journalists, and companies like 3M, which invited him to visit their science lab. It’s what makes America great. “Obviously, we will review this as we do any other high profile nature”, said Boyd.
In a post to his site, Zuckerberg said, “Having the skill and ambition to build something cool should lead to applause”. Chief Larry Boyd said Ahmed was cooperative and described how he made the clock and later determined Ahmed didn’t intend to alarm anyone.
Meanwhile, Ahmed’s story has resulted in many across the nationally rallying around him, particularly on social media.
Another teacher at the school was alarmed by the beeping of the clock, and reported it to the authorities.
The clock, which had a digital display and circuit board, was in the possession of police, he said.
Ahmed is driven off the school campus in handcuffs, gets interrogated by five police officials without his parents present, over and over as to why he built a bomb. His arrest created a furore in the country. Ahmed was suspended for three days.
Mohamed’s case sparked widespread outrage that was especially keenly felt in Silicon Valley where inventiveness, initiative and ingenuity are prized above all else.
“I was really mad”, Mohamed later told the Dallas Morning News after his release.
Pharrell tweeted: ‘Ahmed, it’s innovative, curious, bright minds like yours who move humanity forward. Would you consider interning with us? “She said I don’t want you going around with that”.
