ISU punches ticket to Big 12 Championship game
Cyclones fans always paint the Sprint Center red during the tournament, even for an early tipoff.
Iowa State is coming off a 3-9 season, ranking ninth in the Big 12 in scoring offense with 27.7 points per game and eighth in total offense with 421.6 yards per game.
Well, the win pushed the Cyclones (21-10) into a semifinal matchup with either No. 1 Kansas or TCU on Friday night.
“Next year we won’t have to play so many games”, Williams said.
Dixon added that he hopes the ending to the 2016-17 campaign serves a valuable learning point as the team continues to trend in the right direction after four bumpy years in the Big 12 prior to his arrival. But just how we played and we just didn’t seem to respond like I thought we would. The upset of Kansas marked the first time TCU had beaten a No. 1 team. No. 23 Iowa State pulled away in the first half and never let TCU mount any kind of rally in the second half. ISU also out-rebounded the bigger Horned Frogs, 32-31. The Iowa State Cyclones are averaging 80.8 points on 46.4 percent shooting and allowing 72.2 points on 42.6 percent shooting.
“He’s goofy, funny”, said point guard Monte Morris, who had 15 points, three rebounds and three assists.
“We’re just clicking on all cylinders”, Mitrou-Long said. “The last game didn’t go our way”.
With the NCAA Tournament likely out of the picture, the Frogs appear to be headed to the National Invitational Tournament (NIT). “This is a big step for us as a program, a huge step”. Solomon Young was a force for the Cyclones in the paint and finished with 9 points and 9 rebounds as well as 4 blocks.
An NCAA appearance isn’t in TCU’s future, not with a 19-15 record.
