It’s ‘early days’ in the cloud market, Oracle’s Ellison says
A great differentiator for Oracle, he said, is the unification of on-premise solutions under one vendor – especially converged infrastructure – with cloud solutions at every level of the stack, from SaaS, to PaaS to IaaS.
Among them are two major new applications for manufacturing and e-commerce, which Ellison characterized as stepping stones as Oracle “fills out its footprint” in the cloud.
Fowler explained why cloud is important to his company, stating that GE has a philosophy that it will build what differentiates the company in the marketplace, but buy innovation for things that do not differentiate GE, and do that acquisition in the cloud.

Two competitors Ellison did acknowledge as doing well in cloud are Workday and Salesforce, set up by his protégé Marc Benioff. Oracle has been slow to really be competitive in the cloud. Those are the companies we see most frequently when we are selling applications in the marketplace, and we virtually never, ever see SAP.
