It’s hilarious! Roger Federer’s reaction while watching Maria Sharapova’s match
Federer on Friday became the only male tennis player ever to win 300 Grand Slam matches. Sharapova, though, blew her out in the third round and Federer is now on court.
As to the future, it begins with a fourth-round clash here against Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic and Sharapova said she intends to stick around for a long time yet. Puig didn’t win another game after that. “I thought I played pretty well in the other matches though-my first match I thought I gave a great effort, and my second match, under the circumstances, I thought I played pretty well”.
She also had her left ankle treated by a trainer, but shook off any injury concerns, saying, “pain is my second name”. Sure enough, when Sharapova won a brutal, 27-stroke rally to level the tiebreaker at 5-all, she was two points from victory. In the third set she made 88% of her first serves winning 93% of the points. “I think it’s a proud number”, she said.
“It’s very exciting, I must tell you”, Federer told the crowd following his 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory over Dimitrov.
The world number 103 was unable to carry her momentum into the decider, however, as Sharapova sealed a 6-1 6-7 (5/7) 6-0 win. “Yay, never too late”, she said. Asked on Friday how she navigated the world of professional tennis as a young player, Sharapova credited her parents.
Friedsam had not advanced past the second round of six previous Grand Slams. Kateryna Bondarenko notched one of her biggest wins since coming out of retirement after having a baby in 2013, beating two-time Grand Slam champion Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-1, 7-5.
He may have to meet Grigor Dimitrov, who plays with a style that has been compared with Federer’s, in the third round.
The rain has prevented play Friday on outdoors courts. Seven doubles matches were later postponed. Yet, Bencic, a 18-year-old Swiss phenom, mobilized to win in three sets to set up a fourth-round match with Sharapova.
Fifth-seeded Sharapova got back into a groove with her service game in the third set and put the pressure back on her opponent’s serve, which was broken three times on her way to a bagel.
The manner in which Williams brushed aside rising star Kasatkina showed she is still the woman to beat in Melbourne. And, of course, Sharapova has lost her past 17 matches overall against Serena, including in the finals here a year ago and in the semis at Wimbledon.
Maria Sharapova overcame a mid-match wobble to secure a 6-1, 6-7 (7), 6-0 win over Lauren Davis in the third round of the Australian Open.
In men’s play, Japanese seventh seed Kei Nishikori got past Spain’s Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 7-5, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 despite nursing a wrist problem.
“Yeah, I felt like I made it a little bit more hard than I should have”, Sharapova said. The Russian beauty dropped one set in the third round against Lauren Davis to advance to the round of 16.
But after Friday’s milestone, Sharapova took a moment to pause and reflect on her 600 career wins.
Djokovic has said he didn’t believe any elite players were involved.
Andy Murray starts the night session against Joao Sousa on Margaret Court Arena at 7pm (8am GMT) and Johanna Konta plays Denisa Allertova first on Hisense at 11am (Midnight, GMT).
