It’s time for real action in America to stop the killing

Assault rifles are created to inflict as much damage as possible, and are beneficial for warzones. People with handguns and assault rifles kill people.

The reversal of the Obama regulation – which would have required the Social Security Administration to report the records of some mentally ill beneficiaries to the FBI’s background check system – was one of just a string recent legislative victories for the powerful National Rifle Association.

In 2014, California became the first state to let family members ask a judge to remove firearms from a relative who appears to pose a threat.

Last year, I looked at 10 different issues ranging from abortion to free trade to same-sex marriage that the Pew Research Center polled on. Now it is just a tool for the big armament companies. “We are committed to working with state and local leaders to help secure our schools and tackle the hard issue of mental health”, Trump aid. In them, the question of whether respondents leaned more toward the Democratic or Republican Party on gun policy was askedthree times.

I am exhausted of hearing after a tragedy like the one in Florida that now is not the time to discuss gun control.

For a brief moment after the Las Vegas massacre last fall, Republicans and Democrats in Congress talked about taking a rare step to tighten the nation’s gun laws. In the United States we actually do not know who owns how many guns but a Pew Center study in 2027 estimated that about four in 10 say they either own a gun or live in a home with guns.

Again, though, past history suggests that any bump in public opinion in favor of gun control will not hold.

I have to have a driver’s license to drive a vehicle because a auto is a deadly weapon, and I have to prove I’m responsible enough to drive it.

Until that changes, Republicans don’t really have much of an electoral reason to change their minds on gun control. But perhaps more to their advantage, they have a country that is desensitized to gun violence because violence itself is normalized.

But what ought to get your attention is the fact that it can happen to anybody.

An archived version of the NRA’s Twitter account, taken by the Wayback Machine, showed the gun rights group retweet was live at 3:49 p.m. Wednesday – after the attack that killed 17 had begun, Business Insider reported.

We don’t need even to debate what the reference to a well regulated militia means.

“How do we make sure that individuals with mental illness do not touch a gun?”

Unfortunately the US Constitution severely restricts what state governments can legislate and the Supreme Court is the final arbiter of that issue. Instead, the GOP-controlled House approved a bill in December making it easier for gun owners to legally carry concealed weapons across state lines. This carnage has to stop.

I’m disgusted by the legions of people who parrot the NRA propaganda, ludicrously harping about jargon, about forefathers, about the need to protect ourselves from – what? Stand up for what’s right. I’ve seen the terror on the faces of parents who realize it was their child who was murdered.
