Italian GP: Lewis Hamilton spurred on by ‘negativity’ from Ferrari fans
Raikkonen maintained the lead until his first stop as Hamilton stayed out for several laps in the hope of undercutting the Finn, but when the Briton eventually pitted, he came out behind Raikkonen who himself was caught up behind Valtteri Bottas who had yet to stop. “Well, if he is starting from pole, then I guess he is”.
“When I was driving round, I really try to point out… it’s hard to point to a big crowd and them know that you’re pointing at them but I try to point out and know that I acknowledge them and appreciate them”.
“This is a great team and we are happy with how it is going”, Camilleri said. It is easy in the arena that we are in to allow it to get to you, to allow it to have an impact on your life and have you think about it.
“There was a lot of negativity, and that is natural when you are up against an opposing team but I could see the British flags around the track, and they inspired me and that is who I was driving for”.
However Bottas revealed that the winning tactics had been discussed and agreed upon even before the start of the race. Progress on the reliability side has been slow, and this will add more question marks about its potential to fight with Mercedes and Ferrari in 2019.
“That was definitely a very, very key moment, getting past him was the immediate goal.my race is not really with Kimi, it’s with Sebastian”.
He got a great run on Verstappen and pulled to the outside when Verstappen moved under braking for the first chicane, which bumped Bottas onto the grass and sent him onto the run-off.
“I’m really happy I’ve been able to extract more from the vehicle and hopefully make that little bit of a difference”. We’ll all still wake up tomorrow morning.
Even though he was on fresher tyres he found it nearly impossible to get around the Dutch driver.
“Today was down to the least mistakes, ultimately and looking after the tyres”.
Bottas had used his fresh tyres to quickly wipe out Verstappen’s three-second lead and started to attack for the final podium place with 10 laps to go. It’s pretty much the same move that Kimi did to me. So, I don’t take anything from it.
“I was just telling he did a fantastic race and drove incredibly fairly”.
On the spectrum of things that can go wrong in a qualifying session, finishing second behind a team-mate is at the less disastrous end.
Asked about the thirty point deficit to Hamilton, he said: “I’m not too anxious”.
Hamilton’s overtaking move on Vettel was investigated by the stewards but they took no action, deeming it a racing incident.
“Getting past Sebastian at the beginning was clearly a massive turning point. [I’m] lucky to get second and not third, but it’s just not good enough”.
“I think as a team we will take this result”, he continued. “It will be a very close fight tomorrow and, like every race weekend, we will be giving it everything we’ve got”.
