Itinerary revealed for Prince Charles and Camilla’s tour of Australia next month
The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall will tour New Zealand and Australia from 4th through 15th November.
Other royals to have visited the marae include Charles’ siblings Princess Anne and Prince Edward.
“The programme also reflects The Prince and Duchess’s strong relationship with the military in both New Zealand and Australia”.
In Australia, the Royal couple will mark the centenary of Gallipoli by visiting the new National Anzac Centre in Albany and viewing the point from which the troop convoys departed; get a taste of regional life in the South Australian town of Tanunda and celebrate His Royal Highness’s birthday with Western Australian families at a beachside barbecue in Cottesloe.
In contrast, Charles and Camilla have allocated a whole morning for their visit to Turangawaewae Marae, the home of the Kingitanga or Maori King Movement, where they will view a waka armada of canoes on the country’s longest river, the Waikato, on the North Island, and spend time with the King.
Charles and Camilla will be in New Zealand from November 4 to 10, and will visit Wellington, Dunedin, Nelson, Westport, New Plymouth and Auckland, Prime Minister John Key has announced.
But in recent years, the popularity of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their children has dampened enthusiasm for replacing the monarch with a president, with Prince George being dubbed the “republican slayer” after proving a hit with the Australian public.
Exact dates for each location are yet to be confirmed, but the couple will arrive into Wellington on November 4.
On Thursday afternoon they will head to Dunedin where they will travel on the Taieri Express, visit the Toitu Settlers Museum and the Orokonui Eco Sanctuary.
But the trip isn’t all solemn events and serious organisations – they’ll manage a wine tour of Nelson too.
King Tuheitia, 60, refused to meet William and Kate a year ago because their officials only allocated 90 minutes for the meeting and he felt it was too short, complaining he was “not a few carnival act to be rolled out at the beck and call of anyone”.
Charles will also participate in the Defence Force’s Exercise Southern Katipo near Westport. And in Wellington, the royal couple will lay a wreath at the National War Memorial.
On Monday they will travel to New Plymouth where they will attend Tea with Taranaki at Brooklands Park. The Prince of Wales will visit the Cawthron Institute and The Duchess of Cornwall will visit the WOW museum.
