ITT Tech closes all campuses, state steps in to help students

ITT Technical Institute said Tuesday it was immediately closing all campuses, more than 130 in all, throwing into doubt the future education of thousands of student veterans attending there.

They’ll admit and advise ITT students left in the lurch by the for-profit school’s sudden shutdown this week after it was banned from accepting federal financial aid.

The for-profit education sector has been struggling with falling enrollment, poor job placement records and regulatory scrutiny.

Under President Barack Obama, the Education Department has led a crackdown on for-profit colleges that have misled students or failed to deliver the results they promise. The Sylmar and Oxnard branches of ITT Tech offered bachelor’s and associate’s degree programs in business, graphic design, criminal justice and performing arts, among others.

Southwestern Michigan College is working to help students displaced by the closure of ITT Technical Institute this week.

The U.S. Department of Education is working with ITT Tech students that were either now enrolled or had withdrawn within the past 120 days. “Ultimately, we made a hard choice to pursue additional oversight in order to protect you, other students, and taxpayers from potentially worse educational and financial damage in the future if ITT was allowed to continue operating without increased oversight and assurances to better serve students”.

Just last month, the U.S. Department of Education stopped ITT Tech from enrolling new students who receive federal aid.

Students will not be eligible for the Discharge if they choose to transfer credits and complete their program of study or a comparable program at another school. “Now I have to start over again from scratch”, said Beihl.

ITT’s recruiting and accounting practices have been the subject of federal investigations.
