Ivanka Trump introduces father as a colorblind, gender-neutral leader
Veering between boring speeches by rich friends and employees of Trump (billionaire PayPal founder Peter Thiel, Trump Winery General Manager Kerry Woolard) and frothing-at-the-mouth indictments of Hillary Clinton (former NY mayor Rudy Giuliani, Trump lackey and current New Jersey Governor Chris Christie), the convention was notable mostly for how poorly it was managed, which is in and of itself a scathing indictment of Trump’s supposed competence.
As Amanda Carpenter wrote for the Conservative Review, “Standing before millions of viewers on the final night of the convention to introduce Donald Trump in his momentous acceptance speech, Ivanka declared she is not a Republican and then proposed several liberal policy proposals targeted toward women on behalf of her father”.
A mother of three, told the applauding crowd, “Like many of my fellow millennials, I do not consider myself categorically Republican or Democrat”.
There was hesitation to excitement about Donald Trump, however, as at least one prominent Hispanic and evangelical – representing two groups of voters that Trump must court – still had doubts. Speaker of the House, Paul Ryan, in his speech said that the USA economy “feels stuck” – Oliver fails to see the relevance of feelings in the context of the economy which is all about numbers. Of course, we should also make it clear that we fully believe this pumpkin-haired clown will never assume the presidency of the United States, and that the alarming wave of extremism, racism and disturbing nationalism he has unleashed will fade (along with his egomaniacal buffoonery) in the months following the November election. “And resentment but no solutions about anything that he even talked about”, she said.
Trump also vowed to enforce laws and support police, describing America as being at a volatile and unsafe point.
Much has been made by the Trump children of the value of hard work that their parents instilled in them, and how they spent summers working rather than jetting off to the French Riviera with friends.
Sorry Ivanka, I’m not buying that your dad is a champion for women – in fact he’s shown himself time after time to be just the opposite. “He will fight for equal pay for equal work, and I will fight for this too, right alongside of him”, she said, fuelling speculation further.
“When is Ivanka running for President?” actress Mia Farrow tweeted on Thursday night. I mean, notably, when Senator Ted Cruz refused to endorse him from the podium.
“American families need relief”, she said.
“Real change, the kind we have not seen in decades, is only going to come from outside the system”.
Veering from chant-prompting visions of a law-and-order America striding like a gun-slinging sheriff through a smoldering world run amok to a call to end the assault against the LGBTQ community, Trump cast a very wide net.
“Reducing taxes will cause new companies and new jobs to come roaring back into our country”.
“They’ll make a big deal …”
“Excessive regulation is costing our country as much as $2 trillion a year, and we will end it”, Trump said. Instead, he prefaced his announcement – “I’m proud to be gay, I’m proud to be a Republican but most of all, I’m proud to be an American” – by dismissing the recent transgender bathroom controversy as a “fake culture war”.
