Ivanka Trump wrong about leave policy
Trump’s plan would allow savers to carry over unused balances. We provide our community with the opportunity to share their opinions and vote on topics that matter most to them.
Beyond that, his child care reforms include new income tax deductions for child care expense, the creation of a dependent care savings account and tax deductions for employers who provide child care options for employees.
Notably, his plan is limited to maternity leave – not paternity leave. “These are the people we have to take care of”. “The policy is fleshed out online, so you can go see all the elements of it”. That would seem to be the opposite effect of a good child care policy.
Here’s a look at the differences.
Families could save up to $2,000 each year.
But Trump’s paid leave proposal is only for new mothers. But it would only help those whose state legislatures opt in, and it would provide much less than most women’s existing salaries.
Presented with the source of her father’s quote – an NBC interview in 2004 – Trump shot back that “there’s plenty of time for you to editorialize around this”, and again pitched the campaign’s new childcare policy. And the public knows this: A nonpartisan poll from Brigham Young University and the Deseret News in Salt Lake City showed that Americans think employers should be required to offer at least four months of paid leave to new parents – moms and dads.
That maternity leave being promised is actually six weeks of unemployment benefits, as CNN reported, which Trump intends to fund by ending the annual estimated $3.3 billion worth of unemployment fraud. In business, the most modern and future-thinking companies in the country are in an arms race to offer the best parental leave policies, many of which are offering 16 weeks or more. HillaryClinton.com is virtually buried in policy proposals for child care, family leave, and elder care (including a special section on Alzheimer’s disease).
There’s been much scrutiny of the Clinton Foundation after reports indicated donors may have been given special treatment from the government while Hillary Clinton was secretary of state.
Hoping to improve his appeal to women voters, Trump on Tuesday proposed that the federal government guarantee six weeks of paid maternal leave.
Trump’s detailed proposals marks his latest effort to fix his relationship with women voters, many of whom have come to know Trump as the candidate who suggested Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly asked him tough questions because she was menstruating and who insinuated his GOP rival Carly Fiorina was too ugly to be elected, the CNN said. Combined with the fact that most USA families have two working parents, the issue of family leave is an important one – and one that’s finally getting some attention this election. The GOP nominee’s slapdash proposal isn’t meant to solve social and economic problems but political ones.
It’s time for a meaningful debate on paid family leave, and our leaders in Washington are now in the spotlight to solve it. Trump has brought Republicans to the table – now let’s get to work.
