J. Law takes a shot on the red carpet
For the “Hunger Games” brain trust has clearly chose to pitch this last film to those most devoted to the franchise, with little attempt made to fill in the blanks for any late arrivals or those whose familiarity with the material is not encyclopedic. The Daily Mail does not make this clear; please, if you have any information on this, send us a Snapchat immediately and let us know. “It was such a insane world to be thrown into and an unbelievable project to be part of and grow up doing together”.
Again, I like the scenes that connect to the real world more than those of pure fantasy, such as the attack of the wolf mutts in the sewers under The Capitol (brilliantly done and genuinely frightening but they feel like they’re from another more fantastical franchise). It ups-the-ante in terms of story, action, visuals, and performances – so much so that its predecessor- Mockingjay – Part 1- seems like it will go down as the series’ sacrificial lamb (no matter how well-constructed or well-acted it was).
We obviously don’t know yet whether “Wave” will seize the public imagination, but Hollywood executives must have been thinking at least a bit of Katniss as they greenlit the upcoming movie. “It’s not condescending, it’s not patronising to its young audience”, she said.
Having left behind the “arena” – a wooded realm where teenagers from across the districts of the totalitarian Panem are set against each other in a televised kill-or-be-killed death match – at the conclusion of 2013’s “Catching Fire”, “Mockingjay” moves into a greater war, where Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), the reluctant participant plucked out of the mining region of District 12, discovers a wider network of like-minded rebels.
The first involved meeting a woman at a party for her film Silver Linings Playbook whom she mistook for Elizabeth Taylor – unaware the actress had passed away years earlier. “I’m like, ‘I feel good, I got it all done today'”.
“I’m not at a place where I can complain or speak of not getting enough roles, because I’m very lucky and have had a lot of opportunities”.
As loyalties are tested and a final showdown looms, Katniss is joined on her march to the Capitol by confidants including Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) and Gale (Liam Hemsworth) in seeking a liberated state under a new leader (Julianne Moore). The big ideas of The Hunger Games, including family, corruption, the ethics of war, and individuality (among others), take the stage in telling the final story.
If you favored the gladiatorial action of the first two Hunger Games and disliked Mockingjay – Part 1 for its lack thereof, odds are you might not appreciate Part 2’s politically charged human drama and grim tone. Thus, she decides to take matters into her own hands and leads a group of rebels to face off President Snow (Donald Sutherland).
Though the filming of Mockingjay is now over, Lawrence said she still holds on to the character. She makes amusing quips; she wears fancy dresses; she pals around with her co-stars.
“Waking up in District 13 changed things and losing Peeta changed things”.
This trend of a lack of female protagonists echoes over the past several years, with characters like Maleficent of the 2014 movie of the same name, Sandra Bullock’s Ryan in “Gravity”, Anna and Elsa of “Frozen” (also animated) popping up here and there but with male protagonists dominating the highest-grossing movies or female characters being part of a larger ensemble, as with the “Avengers” films or “Guardians of the Galaxy”.
Collins’ novels were never about fairytale-level hope. You have the dangers of extreme control and the suppression of culture through the government.
“The Hunger Games” got off to a slow start.
