Jürgen Klopp thrilled by Daniel Sturridge after rout of Southampton
Daniel Sturridge of Liverpool celebrates after scoring the equalising goal during the Capital One Cup Quarter Final match between Southampton and Liverpool at St Mary’s Stadium on December 2, 2015 in Southampton, England.
Reflecting on his team’s performance, Klopp said that he was delighted with the result but added that he had problems with the first minute and the following 10 minutes, the Daily Express reported.
In five of Klopp’s 11 games, Liverpool have fallen behind.
Jordon Ibe also netted as Liverpool reached a record 16th League Cup semifinal, joining Manchester City, Everton and Stoke in the last four.
Joe Allen’s first-time pass over the top released Sturridge and although the striker’s first touch allowed Steven Caulker to get back into position, he quickly shifted the ball onto his left foot and drilled home.
“I think [the game] was hard”. But it is at home where they have struggled. “Even with me, an old buffer at 50-odd, I’d want to play for him!”
But, there are 24 league fixtures to go and six points separate Klopp’s side and Man City at the top.
In the knee-jerk world of football, pundits are often guilty of getting carried away, but there is a groundswell of opinion that suggests Liverpool could become genuine title contenders.
“I think that’s demonstrated by what we do during the week and what we do on a Saturday or Sunday and that’s why it’s important”.
Klopp has made a career of winning things in Germany.
His players demolished Southampton, a strong Premier League outfit, 6-1 at their own ground – confirming the wonderful impact the German’s had on the club since his appointment.
Klopp has already been reaping the rewards for his fresh attitude – nothing epitomised it better than the 6-1 dismantling of Southampton on Wednesday night.
“He doesn’t have to play in all the games for us but if we can all together decide when it’s the right moment for fighting and when it’s the right moment for recovery then everything should be okay”. “Daniel scored two goals of great quality”.
“I’ve watched loads of games this season and, for me, there isn’t one team who are running away with it and you could say are definites for the title”.
The winger cut in from the right flank and found his teammate in space, with Origi blasting past Stekelenburg to put the game beyond doubt with just over 20 minutes to play. But if the argument is the 3-1 away win over Chelsea was because Jose Mourinho’s side were in disarray, and the 4-1 thumping of Manchester City was in part due to the absence of Vincent Kompany, then by the time they left Southampton it was full of holes.
“We have won just three of the seven league games at Anfield and they have not scored too many goals”.
