Jack Colback “embarrassed” by Newcastle thrashing as pressure mounts on McClaren
Even though Newcastle face a tough run of fixtures, McClaren firmly believes that he and his team have what it takes to redeem the start.
Newcastle’s supporters vented their frustration during the second half of yesterday’s game, singing “You’re not fit to wear the shirt” and “We’re sh*t and we’re sick of it”.
“It’s about attitude and it’s about running backwards as quickly as you run forwards”. We had that last year and probably the year before as well.
“It’s about pride, it’s about working for each other, it’s about not letting him down next to me and him down next to me. We’re in a relegation battle, and we’ve got to make sure we’re right into that”. “At the present moment the next games, Liverpool, then Spurs, then after that then after that – we’ve got games before January”, he explained.
“I like to play football”.
“We started the game brightly, we asked for a reaction [to last week’s 3-0 defeat to Leicester City], we got that first 10-15 minutes, we got the first goal and we looked bright”. In time, that will turn around and work.
We have to get to February to see if we’ve got a chance of Europe.
For all that Newcastle were woeful, however, Palace were terrific and showed the character McClaren craves.
Goals for James McArthur, Yannick Bolasie and Wilfried Zaha gave the Eagles all three points as they bounced back impressively from their loss to Sunderland on Monday.
Palace extended their lead in the 41st minute with Wickham again the provider, the former England Under-21 worldwide crossing for Zaha to score with a volley that hit the turf and looped over Rob Elliot. McArthur got the fifth in injury time to complete Newcastle’s misery.
Holland global Daryl Janmaat, new signing Chancel Mbemba and captain Fabricio Coloccini were shocking in the 5-1 destruction by Crystal Palace and clearly can no longer be trusted.
“It’s all down to the gaffer, what he does in training”. But for me I can see it slowly developing. It has got to come gradually.
