Jack Grealish ineligible for England’s qualifiers against Estonia and Lithuania
Speaking to the Aston Villa website, Sherwood said: “Hopefully Jack has cleared his mind now and we’re looking for a few improved performances from him now on the pitch, so those worldwide managers are very excited and choose to pick him”.
The 20-year-old announced on Monday that he intends to represent England at worldwide level rather than Ireland, despite having played for the Irish at Under-21 level.
Hodgson has been pressurising the young player to make a decision, which has not gone down well with his Ireland counterpart.
Grealish will not be selected for England’s upcoming Euro 2016 qualifiers against Estonia and Lithuania next month, however.
It is understood that the Football Association expects his worldwide clearance will not be granted for four to six weeks.
Instead, it is expected he will feature in a friendly against European champions Spain on 13 November in Alicante, affording him the opportunity of pressing his claims for inclusion in their squad for next summer’s Euros in France.
He said: ” I think England already recognise that he is a talent they would like to secure the services of.
“His chances of getting a regular spot with the England team would be a little more limited and we could do with him at the moment as well”. “He’s a top, top player, I think he’s going to be really big in the game when he gets a bit stronger”.
“He still has a lot to prove, he has shown he has great ability”.
“It’s disappointing but he’s only a young kid and he has every right to choose who he wants to play for”.
“But 18 months ago we could have capped him at full worldwide level”.
Grealish had been at the centre of a battle between the two countries and held talks with Hodgson and Republic of Ireland manager Martin O’Neill earlier this summer.
“I don’t think it could be money because they [players] get paid well enough”.
“At the end of the day, it’s up to the player himself and his family”.
“Jack Grealish has made a decision over his worldwide future and opted to play for England”, said the Tweet.
