Collins, known for her extravagant persona and quotes like “My weakness is wearing too much leopard print”, was seen as an icon because of the sexual content of books.
The best-selling author and sister of screen star Jackie was famous for her romantic novels, with a career spanning over four decades and 500 million books sold around the globe.
She explained: “I didn’t want to make it public and I didn’t want people’s sympathy”.
She said Joan had been shocked by the news.
Jackie Collins has gained her wings. She published her first book, The World Is Full of Married Men, in 1968, at a time when the romance genre was relatively prim, focusing on romantic love, yet demurring from frank depictions of sex.

On being asked if she feels sorry for not sharing such a big news with her loved ones. “She was my best friend”. I’ve lived my life, I’ve travelled all over the world. Her 1985 book, Hollywood Wives, went on to be made into a mini-series. But a year after her divorce form Austin she married Oscar Lerman, whom she would stay with until his death in 1992.
Memorial services will be private, yet Collins’ family has welcomed US supporters to donate in Collins’ name to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Organization – in lieu of flowers.
