Jags top Ravens on long FG on final play
Down 20-19, Jacksonville called on their kicker Jason Myers, who has had a rough season so far, to give them a victory with a 53-yard field goal. The correct call would’ve given the Ravens, who lost 22-20, the win.
Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles struggled throughout the game, so the turnovers proved to be the difference for Jacksonville.
Baltimore has given up 22 completions of at least 25 yards, including eight of 47 yards or more. This was an effective strategy because the Ravens do not have any wide receivers that would strike fear into most defenses.
Flacco threw three touchdown passes Sunday, but he also committed three turnovers. The Jaguars held the Ravens running backs to 89 yards on 21 carries.
After watching the first half of the game between these two teams, it’s obvious that the old adage applied here: You are what you earn in the NFL.
“Absolutely”, middle linebacker Paul Posluszny said.
Operation Two Wins in Five Days is off to an interesting start for the Jaguars. The run defense has become the strength of the Jaguars’ defense. It was one of Bortles’ worst games as a pro, in my opinion. Anyway, the point is the Jaguars haven’t had much luck this season. He’ll need his players to continue to improve because his job is indeed on the line.
Obviously, it’s a shame, a sporting crime, that the officials decided the game and kept the Ravens from a win they could have used.
“I saw zeros on the clock, so I started jumping up and down”, Smith said.
Rudd’s helmet toss was illegal, so the Chiefs got to move the ball half the distance to the end zone, setting up a game-winning field goal that beat the Browns, 40-39. The Jaguars led, 10-7, with 3:32 remaining in the second quarter.
“That was something else”, Ravens cornerback Asa Jackson said. Still, the Jaguars were able to stack the line of scrimmage because they simply were not overly concerned about the Ravens wideouts. The kick was unsuccessful and Baltimore took a 14-10 lead into halftime. Derek Carr threw two TD passes for Oakland (4-5), but also was intercepted twice.
Myers, who earlier missed a 26-yard field goal try, boomed this one through the uprights.
History repeated itself just moments later, as House once again picked off Flacco.
He then tripped at the shotgun position, stepping on his running back’s foot, but he got back up, only to be corralled by Ravens defensive end Elvis Dumervil.
Bortles put up great numbers against the NY Jets in Week 9’s 28-23 loss, but his three turnovers ended up being one of the main factors in the Jaguars’ loss.
Flacco and the Ravens surged downfield after Jacksonville’s “go ahead” score. That would’ve led to a 10-second runoff, and the Ravens would’ve preserved a 20-19 victory.
The question now is can the Jaguars carry over the momentum through a short week of preparation? A few Ravens were even celebrating as the clock seemed to expire. A big third-and-10 play was shut down by the Jaguars and forced the Ravens to punt.
On Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles’ last snap of the game, left tackle Luke Joeckel was not set.
Baltimore entered the game 24th in yards allowed (383.6) and 29th in passing yards allowed (283.9) and last on third down (opponents were converting at a 48.2 percent clip).
