Jail to release more Sandra Bland footage before her death
Waller County Judge Trey Duhon told reporters in a presentation of the video that law enforcement officials have received death threats stemming from Internet rumors that Bland was dead before she was taken to jail.
KHOU-TV Sandra Bland walks through Waller County Jail in a newly released video as Texas authorities continue to battle skepticism about her death. They show Bland arriving at the jail and a jail employee speaking with her as they filled out forms.
Bland was found dead three days after she was arrested following a confrontation with a white Department of Public Safety trooper after what started as a routine traffic stop.
Bland, a 28-year-old African-American from suburban Chicago, had been arrested for allegedly assaulting the state trooper who had initially pulled her over on a traffic stop. Bland is often seen with her head down or cradling her head in her hands.
Duhon said that the videos are being released now because of threats made against Waller County officials and property. Officials have said Bland committed suicide by hanging, but family and friends have questioned that finding, saying the young woman was delighted by the prospect of working at the university here, where she graduated in 2009.
Even Hershel Smith, the constable of the precinct that covers the area where Prairie View sits, has been a victim of the overzealous police in the city of Hempstead.
Sandra Bland’s autopsy shows she had been taking an epilepsy drug called Keppra, that can cause suicidal thoughts or impair thinking or reactions.
He said that the online hacktavist group Anonymous is accusing the sheriff’s department of trying to cover up Bland’s death and spread rumors that she was already deceased by the time her mugshot was taken.
Further, an initial toxicology report was released Monday that two experts said raised the possibility that she may have used marijuana while in custody.
The amount of THC, one of the active components of marijuana, in Bland’s system was 18 micrograms per liter, the report said. Authorities say she hanged herself in her jail cell using a plastic bag. Melissa Phillip/AP Protesters rally outside the Waller County Courthouse after a march from the Waller County Jail in on July 17 to protest the death of Sandra Bland, who was found dead in the jail.
Encinia said in an affidavit released earlier Tuesday that after handcuffing her for becoming combative, she swung her elbows at him and kicked him in his right shin.
“She said, ‘He’s not answering, it’s going straight to voicemail”. Jordan said he hoped to “provide another set of eyes” to the case and credited Mathis for opening up the investigation to extra scrutiny.
