Jaitley dismisses Congress claim of stealing Goa mandate
LEADERS ON HOLIDAY IN GOA Congress MLA from Valpoi, Vishwajit Rane said he has resigned as MLA and is ready to face the people again.
The BJP bagged 13 seats in the polls, while it claimed the support of three MLAs each of the Goa Forward Party and Maharashtravadi Gomantak Party, besides three independents. “They have destroyed the trust of the people of Goa”, he said. By then it was too late as BJP, armed with letters of support had staked claim to form the government and procured the gubernatorial invite too.
The BJP leader who spearheaded the party’s campaign in Goa was tipped to be the next Chief Minister of the coastal state if party manages to form the government.
Ahead of the floor test, the Congress refused to comment on their strategy asking people to “wait and watch”. “As you saw everyone voluntarily come and voted; none of them were kept in secluded places as is the cases with opposition”, the new Goa CM added. The party later also alleged BJP of using “money power” to cobble a coalition and petitioned the Supreme Court to stall the swearing-in of Parrikar. The party was totally aloof to the storm brewing up inside.
Another senior leader, Sheila Dikshit, said Congress should shed its feudalistic image and its members should share the blame for the party’s defeat in UP.
Congress subsequently moved the Supreme Court against the governor’s decision, and the apex court ordered a floor test on Thursday, March 16.
As a leader, he said, he trusts regional party leaders and wants to give them more freedom. However, the governor yesterday invited the BJP-led group to form the ministry.
He said he was yet to decide which party he would head to, but did not rule out joining the BJP.
He had said that he was “open” to quit his party if no action is taken against those responsible for the Congress’ debacle. Even the Congress-backed independent was quick to extend support to the BJP, while the MGP had already assured support to BJP with the condition that Parrikar be brought back to Goa.
