Jamaica’s Usain Bolt stars in return from injury
Bolt, back at the Olympic Stadium where he won three golds at London 2012 and in his final race before Rio, was introduced to the crowd ahead of the event while being paraded around the newly-laid track standing in the back of a Nissan pick-up truck, an under-stated entry by his standards. “I need more work but over time I will be fine”.
Kendra Harrison broke the 28-year 100m hurdles world record Friday at the London Diamond League meeting but she won’t be able to run at the Rio Olympics.
The 23-year-old, who has been a revelation all season, shockingly failed to make the cut at the US Olympic Trials when she ended up in the sixth place.
Brit Adam Gemili was third in a season’s best time of 20.07sec. Having completed his first 200 of 2016, he will now return to Jamaica for further training before he looks to defend his 100, 200 and 4×100 titles in Rio, looking to complete a “triple-triple” in the process.
Instead, Harrison will have to settle for her record-breaking night at the London Diamond League meet being her crowning moment of the summer.
“The thing is I said to Denise (Lewis) right before that race, I said, “She’s out her to break a world record to make up for that (the Trials)”.
There was also a brilliant performance from Laura Muir, who broke Kelly Holmes’ British 1,500m record with a hugely impressive display, pulling well clear of the field to come home in 3:57.49.
“I thought the cornering wasn’t ideal”.
Bolt’s main rival for the Olympic crown will be America’s Justin Gatlin, and Bolt delivered a warning to those challenging him for his 100 and 200 crowns. Initially I saw 12.5 and I was just happy to come out here and win. I just told myself you know that you are the best.
“But once I try again in a few years, I know getting top three is probably going to be the best feeling in the world, knowing that I conquered so much to get there”.
Bolt, 29, had been sidelined since early June with a thigh muscle tear which forced him to withdraw from the Jamaican Olympic trials.
Harrison flashed her potential back in May at the Prefontaine Classic in running 12.24 to set the American record and after running 12.40 unchallenged in the heats on the fast track in London today, the record chase was on.
“I was in pretty good shape before I had to pull out, so I wasn’t really anxious”. Based in his home country of Jamaica,”The Boy Who Learned to Fly” stars an animated Usain Bolt in his school age days recognizing his lightening-speed ability to run.
In the absence of Bolt, who focused on the 200m instead, the men’s 100m went to the Frenchman Jimmy Vicaut.
Harrison said she was nervous before Friday’s preliminary race. Chris Carter was second for the United States with a jump of 16.89 meters.
