Jambi preparing for spread of Zika virus
The number of pregnant women in Colombia infected with the Zika virus has doubled in a week, officials said. The Aedes aegypti mosquito transmits the Zika virus and is being studied at the institute.
Experts say most people don’t experience severe symptoms when dealing with the virus. It could take up to two weeks to get results back because of the volume of cases the CDC is working. That’s a real problem though, because they can unknowingly spread the virus to other Aedes mosquitoes and with global travel the disease keeps spreading. The Zika virus can not be spread person to person through casual contact.
Almost 4,000 people cases of microcephaly were reported in Brazil in 2015, according to WHO.
“It was inevitable that cases of imported Zika would arrive to Peru”, Velasquez said at a news conference. “However, a large majority of people who contract the virus are asymptomatic, and in the case where a person feels symptoms, they are usually mild”.
China is closely cooperating with other countries and the World Health Organization, exchanging medical information and staying briefed on the virus situation to be prepared for any risks, it said.
Laboratory testing for Zika virus infection is available at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC is still learning what the connection between the virus and the birth defect is, but pregnant women are advised to avoid affected areas or take extra precautions to prevent mosquito bites.
There are no vaccines or medications for Zika. Currently, there are 35 cases of Zika in the us – all acquired outside the country.
That country has seen a surge in babies with microcephaly, or abnormally small brains, born from mothers infected with zika, although there is no definitive proof zika was the cause. “It tends to be fever, red eyes, a rash and joint pain”.
According to an official statement issued by the ministry on Friday, pregnant women have the same risk of getting infected as the rest of the population.
