James Anderson could return as England consider resting Chris Woakes
Cook’s correct call in Rajkot was the first time India skipper Virat Kohli has lost the toss as Test captain, and his counterpart hopes that broken run continues.
The Indian fielding unit had a frightful first two days after England openers Alastair Cook and Haseeb Hameed were dropped on three occasions in the first hour.
Ben Stokes was then dropped twice behind the stumps by Wriddhiman Saha, the all-rounder going on to make 128 in the tourists’ mammoth 537.
Acknowledging the fielding has improved in the last one-year, Kohli wants his fielders to learn their lessons from the Rajkot Test. “It’s within the rules and the regulations”, Virat Kohli told media in a press conference on the eve of the second Test. We have done really well in all the three departments over the past three and a half months that I have been a part of this team or even before that. Be it pulling him out of a first-class game in between. Both, however, had to bowl their first-innings overs when the pitch was at its flattest.
Anderson, England’s record Test wicket-taker, has not played a competitive match since the series with Pakistan in August due to the longstanding shoulder injury that dogged his summer but has pushed hard to prove his fitness in the nets since arriving in India last week.
The Delhi opener in his second coming has been far from impressive, despite the talk of him coming back to the team with change in stance and attitude. That was the whole idea behind it.
“He has recovered now, and as per the protocol we wanted him to go and play a first-class match”.
It was a mixed performance from the World No.1 ranked test team, with the likes of Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara impressing while Amit Mishra and Gautam Gambhir failed to have any sort of impact on the game. “Gautam (Gambhir) got the chances that he got and he played really well in different situations”, Kohli explained. On the last day, a late declaration by Alastair Cook saw India squeeze out draw.
In Rajkot, England’s spinners took more wickets and conceded fewer runs than India’s.
Visakhapatnam turf might not be as friendly as Rajkot was to the English batsmen and Ashwin and Jadeja will likely get back into play in the second Test.
The expectation is that it will help spinners and also pacers early on.
Karnataka batsman KL Rahul is back to the India test cricket team squad for the 2nd Test match against England, scheduled to take place in Vizag, starting this Thursday.
