Jamie Murray: Australian Open doubles win pinnacle of my career
Jamie Murray, right, of Britain talks to partner Bruno Soares of Brazil during their match against Daniel Nestor of Canada and Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic in the men’s doubles final at the Australian Open tennis champ…
Nestor, who recently became the first player in ATP Tour history to record 1,000 career doubles victories, thinks he and Stepanek can use their performance in Melbourne as a building block for the season.
He added: “Those concerns are going to be at the back of his mind”.
“I mean, every time I walk in this room, everyone expects me to win every single match, every single day of my life”, Williams said in her post-match news conference. “I’d like to thank Danny and Radek”.
“Andy’s probably a bit more fragile than the other players”, suggested Forzoni, who worked with Murray in 2007 and has also advised players for the LTA. “That has always been our goal”.
And this time they made no mistake, Soares finding a string of good serves and clinching the Australian Open – a first men’s doubles grand slam title for both men.
The 17-year-old Anderson was the fifth Australian in the last decade to win the junior title, joining the likes of Nick Kyrgios (2013) and Bernard Tomic (2008) as champion.
For Murray and Soares, it was the first major title in either of their careers.
Andy Murray reached the Australian Open final for the fifth time, setting up a more anxious wait than ever to see if he can finally break his drought at Melbourne Park.
Andy Murray was in the stands at Rod Laver Arena watching the match, which didn’t finish until 1 a.m. Sunday. “I don’t know why you’re here taking photos but we’ll be there supporting you”, a tearful Murray said in a courtside interview. “I don’t know if he works as hard on his mental game as he does on his physical game”. She had never lost a major final that went three sets, and she had only lost to three players – twice to her sister Venus (U.S. Open 2001, Wimbledon 2008), and once each to Maria Sharapova (Wimbledon 2004) and Sam Stosur (U.S. Open 2011). He was also favored to win his first French Open title a year ago, riding a 28-match winning streak into the final as the top seed, but was upset by eighth-seeded Stan Wawrinka, who had only beaten him three times in 20 previous matches.
Murray and Soares produced more impressive tennis as the match reached its conclusion. “So I have to be proud of that achievement”.
It was the first grand slam title for the Briton and his Brazilian partner, in their first major tournament together. Stepanek won the 2012 title at Melbourne Park with Leander Paes.
“They really came through”.
Murray and Soares would not be denied, however, claiming eight of the next 11 points to break back immediately and serve out the match.
The unseeded Canadian-Czech duo, which has won 10 Grand Slam doubles titles collectively, hit 12 winners in the opening set – double their opponents’ – and they saved the only break point they faced.
It’s been a good tournament for Scotland overall.
