Jamie Murray-Bruno Soares Win Australian Open Doubles Title
When Murray trailed by two sets to one it seemed that Raonic was on the verge of fulfilling the promise that has seen him earmarked as the best prospect among the next generation, but the 25-year-old Canadian appeared to suffer a groin injury early in the fourth set.
Djokovic was in irresistible form against Roger Federer on Thursday and has lost only once in his last 34 Grand Slam matches, but he is facing an opponent in Murray who is determined to break through after coming up short so many times at the Australian Open and add a third Grand Slam trophy to his 2012 US Open and 2013 Wimbledon titles.
Murray is just seven days older than the Serb and while he enjoyed some success earlier on the professional tour, Djokovic has won 10 of their last 11 encounters.
“If you play a quick match on the Friday, it doesn’t really make a huge difference”, said Murray.
“I don’t think he’d ever won against him in like 13 attempts”. We’ve played a bunch of times here, but hopefully it can be a different result.
The Scot had reached the last two finals with ex-partner John Peers at Wimbledon and the US Open and lost. With his wife due to have their first child some time in the next couple of weeks, it would have been easy for Murray to let things slip when he trailed the Canadian, Milos Raonic, by two sets to one in the semi-final here yesterday. I think both of us will try to serve high percentage of first serves and not allow the other player to attack the second serve too many times.
“It was tough because he (Raonic) didn’t miss one first serve in the (third set) tiebreaker and he has one of the best serves in tennis”, Murray said.
Asked if he’d watch his brother Jamie Murray compete for the men’s doubles title, men’s singles finalist Andy Murray said he would not. I need to do it, you know, for a very long period if I want to get the win.
Should he again vanquish the world number two, Djokovic will join Borg and Laver with 11 Grand Slam titles, and equal Roy Emerson’s record of six Australian crowns – and all at the age of just 28.
After being so close to a calendar-year Grand Slam in 2015, she has no chance to push for that honor in 2016 after losing the season’s first major.
Andy said: “For it to be the first time to happen is incredible, really. What matters is what happens Sunday”. Djokovic played some of his best tennis in his last match, simply destroying Federer in all aspects.
“(It will be) a lot about tactics and a lot about how of course you handle your emotions of the greatness of that occasion of playing for the grand slam title”.
“There’s not many tennis players that have come out of Scotland, so I never expected to be doing this”.
Andy Murray of Britain reacts after losing a point to Milos Raonic of Canada during their semifinal match at the Australian Open tennis championships in Melbourne, Australia, Friday, Jan. 29, 2016.
He added, “I understand the kind of desire and will to win that is present. I must be there from the first point and playing very deep… play my game and be aggressive like she is”.
“There has been a lot of talks about his second serve, and I’m sure he and his team are very much aware of that”, Djokovic said.
