Jamie Vardy: How Leicester Can Achieve Champions League Glory
Jorge Sampaoli’s Sevilla missed few chances and Leicester were able to hold on to a slender lead to the King Power Stadium for the second leg on 14 March.
On top of Vardy’s first goal in the Champions League and only his sixth of the season, Leicester were indebted to a stunning display from Kasper Schmeichel as he made a string of saves, including from Joaquin Correa’s first-half penalty.
Correa got some redemption in the second half, as he made it 2-0 in the 62nd minute after a nice setup by Stevan Jovetic.
League One side, Millwall FC, have hammered another nail in Leicester’s coffin knocking them out of the FA Cup just four days ago. “But football is football and the opponent has [taken an opportunity]”.
Ranieri was understandably pleased with the fight that his team showed, too, saying: “We showed our big heart and organisation, belief and we never give up”, he said.
“The way we performed and worked for Leicester and the fans, with the way the season has been going, was massive for us”.
“We know in our mind we are the underdog”, added Ranieri.
Champions League continued with its second week action of the round of 16 stage, where Juventus got better of the portuguese club Porto to stun them 2-0 at an away clash.
Who could replace Claudio Ranieri at Leicester?
“Today we are not talking about the team that won the league so brilliantly, we’re talking about one that is not doing well and is fighting relegation”. It was poor from Leicester as Jovetic broke down the middle and had Huth and Morgan in knots, he produced a great turn before laying it to Correa who smashed it into the roof of the net.
“It has been tough, things haven’t clicked this year, but we know if we keep giving 100 percent for each other things will change”.
Sampaoli rued after the game that Sevilla deserved to win by a better margin given their performance.
Leicester City has gone from fairytale heroes to the doghouse in less than 12 months, but a vital goal from Jamie Vardy in a 2-1 Champions League loss to Sevilla could be the boost its season needs. “This goal reopens our confidence”.
“I really hope that can kick us on in the league”.
As well as helping his team lift the title last season, Vardy set a new Premier League record by scoring in 11 consecutive matches. “They are still in this tie”.
Next up for Leicester is a meeting with Liverpool in the league on Monday, while Sevilla takes on Real Betis on Saturday.
