Janet Jackson and The Smiths nominated for Hall of Fame honor
This year’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees include a few familiar faces and one star who has just returned to the scene. The Cars, Cheap Trick, Chicago, The J.B.’s, Chaka Khan, Los Lobos, and Steve Miller are all also under consideration for the first time.
You could make the argument that in terms of pushing music forward, N.W.A. (along with The Smiths, Nine Inch Nails, and Chic) are among the most influential artists on this list.
Many acts before Nirvana have used the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremonies as a chance to reunite, with The Police, Led Zeppelin, and Talking Heads among those to use the event for a special one-off performance.
The top five vote-getters earn a “fan ballot” addition of one vote apiece to the total cast by the hall’s 700-odd voting members.

With the success of Straight Outta Compton, the thought of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame organization once again forgoing the group’s acceptance into what may be the world’s most revered house of music history seems nearly ludicrous. Prior to the 1986 release of her third album, “Control”, Jackson made several important personal and business decisions. From now until December 9th, fans can vote on RollingStone.com for the nominees they’d like to see inducted.
The induction ceremony, which will be aired on HBO later next year, will be held in April in New York.
Another Chicago native, Chaka Khan, was nominated for the first time.
Last year, acts including Ringo Starr, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, Lou Reed, Green Day, and Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble were inducted.
