Janikowski leads Raiders to win over Chargers
Oakland Raiders’ Charles Woodson (24) celebrates their 23-20 win against the San Diego Chargers in overtime of their National Football League game at O.co Coliseum in Oakland, Calif., on Thursday, Dec. 24, 2015.
NFL’s Return to Los Angeles? This year has been miserable for the Chargers and they’re now looking at a plan that would allow them to share an L.A. stadium with the Raiders if both teams were to relocate.
The Raiders took the opening kick in overtime and appeared ready to self-destruct, drawing three costly penalties.
Chargers 7, Raiders 0, 9:09 first quarter: San Diego’s Kendall Reyes intercepts a Derek Carr pass on Oakland’s first drive.
Next up was Smith, who reached from behind and knocked the ball loose from tight end David Johnson after a 4-yard gain.
Philip Rivers’ last pass fell incomplete near Charles Woodson’s feet and the celebration began.
It wasn’t pretty. Sloppy play, mounting injuries and flags everywhere made for a somewhat ugly football game on Thursday night.
It was another tough night for Carr, who had just 134 passing yards in regulation. San Diego elected to take the points off the board and it looked like the risk would pay off. Rivers hit Ladarius Green for a 30-yard touchdown. He caught 11 passes in their last meeting for 75 yards and two touchdowns in that game. They went for the two-point conversion to take a 3-point lead at 20-17.
The Chargers roared back, quickly marching into Oakland territory. Raiders quarterback Derek Carr completed only 23 of 38 passes for 204 yards, was sacked three times and had a passer rating of 72.7.
The Chargers tied it with Lambo’s 45-yarder with 1 minute remaining to send it to overtime. “I was nearly in the end zone”.
The Chargers also added a field goal before the half to grab a 17-10 lead.
One of those punts from the Raiders’ Marquette King pushed San Diego back to their 9-yard line.
Facing second-and-5 from Oakland’s 36, Carr tried to hit fullback Marcel Reece with a short pass, but defensive end Kendall Reyes deflected the ball at the line of scrimmage and made a diving interception. The Chargers failed to score a touchdown in a home loss to Kansas City and a road loss to Denver.
Although he was held to 15 rushing yards on 12 carries, Donald Brown rushed for a touchdown while assuming the injured Melvin Gordon’s role. Murray has had only four games with 20 or more carries this season, and he rushed for at least 100 yards only twice.
The Raiders couldn’t attack the Chargers deep, even with San Diego’s top two defensive backs, Jason Verrett (groin) and Eric Weddle (hamstring), leaving early. The Oakland offense went MIA for much of the second half. Woodson said the game is bigger than him, and his teammates seemed to really respond well to everything he said. The game is also airing as a live stream online.
Tonight we have an AFC West division battle between the Chargers and Raiders.
