Japan Lifts Sanctions On Iran After Nuclear Deal
A diplomatic incident between Iran and the United States could still undermine the nuclear deal, causing sanctions to “snap back” and exposing investors.
But Wait! What Do The New Sanctions Mean?
His comments to The Associated Press came after the US on Sunday imposed sanctions against 11 individuals and entities involved in Iran’s ballistic missile program as a result of Tehran’s firing of a medium-range ballistic missile, one day after the Obama administration lifted economic penalties against Iran over its nuclear program.
Netanyahu’s concern is that “Iran will now have more resources to dedicate to their terrorism and aggressions in the region and in the world, and Israel is prepared to deal with any threat”.
“Even after the signing of the nuclear agreement, Iran has not abandoned its aspirations to acquire nuclear weapons, and continues to act to destabilize the Middle East and spread terrorism throughout the world while violating its global commitments”, the statement said.
Corker was then contacted by President Barack Obama’s administration about the link to American prisoners and made a decision to hold off on more calls for sanctions, for a time.
“Japan would like to further develop its traditionally friendly ties with Iran” following the lifting of sanctions, Kishida told reporters.
Senior Indian foreign policy expert Rudroneel Ghosh opines that Saudi Arabia has made a mistake by considering the Iranian nuclear deal as a blank cheque to Tehran to carry out a covert nuclear weapons programme. Under this amended policy, both U.S. and non-U.S. persons will be permitted on a case-by-case basis to export, re-export, sell, lease, or transfer to Iran commercial passenger aircraft for civil use, as well as spare parts, components, and services related to such commercial passenger aircraft. They also heavily restricted trade within emerging Iranian sectors such as transportation and energy.
The recent conflict Iran, a Shiite state, had with Saudi Arabia, where Sunnis are the majority, following the execution of 47 people, including a prominent Shiite cleric, understandably worsened the relationship – a sectarian conflict that the Arab world would do well to avoid. This group will no longer be able to access U.S. banking systems.
However, the American trade embargo is still in place, as limited business activities have been allowed, like selling or purchasing of Iranian caviar, pistachios, saffron and carpets and American commercial aircraft and their parts. Iran’s program has now been sharply curtailed for at least a decade. Through hostage-taking, a business Iran has mastered since the early days of the Islamic Revolution, the Islamic Republic has proven once again that it can extract concessions and score political points at a relatively low cost.
In exchange, Iran will benefit from over $100 billion in overseas frozen assets.
“We have deals that are being worked out with Airbus all sorts of companies from nuclear technology companies, to irrigation, green energy… a whole range of them”, he said, without elaborating. Not only that, their oil market will be allowed to expand. Some of that excess supply has been stored in tankers, and Iranian officials have said their plan is to ramp up production and ship an additional 500,000 barrels a day.
However, despite Iran’s acceptance of strict rules on compliance, enforced by worldwide inspection and verification, the deal has implacable critics who distrust Tehran, notably regional adversaries Israel and Saudi Arabia. Such a war could be beneficial for India and other countries, as they will get an opportunity to purchase oil at cheap rates.
