Japan to provide planes, ships for Philippines amid sea dispute with China
The friendship between India and Japan has a long history rooted in spiritual affinity and strong cultural and civilizational ties.
Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping over the raging maritime disputes between the two Asian powerhouses. Prime Minister Modi noted that Japan had technology and innovation while India had the power of youth and a huge market, Swarup said.
They discussed the upcoming Japanese Industrial Parks in India and cooperation in the area of ship breaking.
The leaders are also expected to discuss investment and other economic cooperation, the report said.
“Both countries should follow the new concept featuring win-win cooperation, make joint efforts to advance regional cooperation, and address global challenges”, he said.
At the same time, PM Modi expressed appreciation for the consistent support rendered by Japan in India’s infrastructure development, technology upgradation and skill building.
The latest tensions haven’t dented Chinese tourism to Japan – the 731,400 visitors in July marked a monthly record – or impacted trade.
The two leaders also discussed regional issues and worldwide developments. “PM Narendra Modi meets Japan PM Shinzo Abe”, the Prime Minister’s Office tweeted as the nearly 45 minutes-long bilateral talks began.
External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup earlier quoted Modi as saying that his first meeting was with “a special friend and a valued partner”. In addition, the two leaders exchanged views on African development and cooperation in the worldwide arena, including United Nations Security Council reform, among other subjects, taking into account the fact that both countries are now serving as non-permanent member countries of the United Nations Security Council. They had met on the sidelines of the Nuclear Security Summit in Washington in April.
