Japan US Military Base Explosion: Multiple Blasts Reported At United States
Reuters have reported that the Pentagon could not yet confirm that the blast actually occurred on the base.
In Washington, US Navy Commander Bill Urban said the blast was at a building at the Sagami Depot, a US Army post in Sagamihara, about 40 km southwest of Tokyo.
A warehouse at the Sagamihara general depot, in Kanagawa prefecture bordering Tokyo, was ablaze, it said, quoting the local fire department and other sources.
The blaze raged at the Sagami General Depot, which is a US facility used for storing fuel and munitions. Several blasts are audible in the videos.
She described smelling a gunpowder-like odor as the explosions continued for about 10 minutes.
“Fire from the American military base has occurred”, the Sagamihara Fire Department said, according to JBC.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or death in Monday morning’s explosions.
The official cause of the explosion Sunday remains unknown.
Three explosions were reported on the base in April of this year, in what police said they believed was an attack carried out by a left-wing Japanese extremist group, the Wall Street Journal reported.
