Jason Day is third round leader at PGA
Justin Rose, one shot back at 8-under, has one hole left to play. I’ve got a chance to win a major championship.
“It’s all about setting a realistic goal and target”, McIlroy added.
For now, Day is focused on staying in the present and winning the first one. The good news? Woods has made it to Saturday in three of the majors this year, though two of them were because weather forced a Saturday cut.
The PGA Championship continues today-Sunday from Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisconsin.
Rory McIlroy shot another 1-under 71, with “so-so iron play”.
Swede David Lingmerth, who won his first PGA Tour title at the Memorial Tournament in June, had held the clubhouse lead on Friday at seven under after carding 70.
The end to round two, after an electrical storm had brought a premature end to play on day two, confirmed the exit of Tiger Woods from the 97th PGA Championship after he failed to make the cut for the third successive major of the year.
Scott Piercy (70) and Brendan Steele (69) joined Spieth at 6-under 138.
However, the Ryder Cup star got back on track in thrilling fashion on the fifth, taking off his shoes and socks to stand in a water hazard and play his third shot from a grass bank before holing from 20 feet for an unlikely birdie. So, that would leave me eight shots back. Iwata reeled off five birdies and an eagle, and he saved par on the 18th for a 63.
In pursuit of his first major victory after several close calls over the past five years, Day carded 66 in receptive conditions at Whistling Straits to post a 15-under total of 201.
“Just to try to get my name on the Wanamaker Trophy, that’s about it. That’s the only history I’ll be thinking of when we step on the first tee is you can hoist that trophy tomorrow and make it happen”, Spieth said.
But with just one more birdie on the front nine, the chasing pack was soon looming large in Jones’ rear-view mirror. He missed by one turn of the golf ball a birdie on the 18th hole at St. Andrews that would have put him in a playoff at the British Open. “So, yeah, I’m very, very pleased to have a chance to win another major”. The former world number one had left himself with plenty to do after putting poorly on the way to an opening 75 and despite improved play in the second round, he finished two strokes outside the cutline.
Spieth emerged victorious at the US Open after Day succumbed to vertigo on the final afternoon. “We’ve got some scoring holes and some tough ones to finish on”. I made a couple of putts today.
At No. 15, Day hit “an average 5-iron” short of the green into a bunker and, finding the sand a bit heavier than he expected, took two shots to get out.
“I said it earlier in the week, every time I get on the green I get excited”, said Day, who had 24 putts Saturday. At this point it would be really cool, but it isn’t a grand slam.
“You can never count out Jordan right now with hos he’s playing, especially this year”, Day said. “I didn’t putt as well as I would have liked”, McIlroy said. “Luckily, I hit a great bunker shot which led to a birdie”. Few things are likely more terrifying on the course than watching Spieth work his way into contention.
Day is through 14 holes and Jones is through 12.
