Jay Cutler signs one-year deal with Miami Dolphins
Gase’s history with Cutler made him a wiser choice one month before the season-opener than Colin Kaepernick, whom Gase never coached, or any other options. Miami also raised its monetary offer, sources close to the situation said. The person confirmed the agreement to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the Dolphins weren’t expected to announce the deal until Cutler signed the $10 million, one-year deal.
Former Denver Broncos and Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler retired from professional football in March, but that decision was short-lived.
“I know everybody here wishes him nothing but the best”, Bears coach John Fox said of Cutler.
“I feel good where he was at the last couple of years”. “I’m happy to have him back in the game”. Now, though, the family might be spending some time in Florida, as Cutler has just signed a deal with the Miami Dolphins.
On Monday, the Dolphins introduced Cutler to the Miami media with a press conference. But without a quarterback, or at least a true starting quarterback, they’re looking at a wildcard berth at best. He may even be regretting the decision to make a return to the NFL. Cutler will compete with Matt Moore for a starting job while Tannehill remains out with a left knee injury that could sideline him for the entire season.
The larger point is that, while the number can change depending on how wide a lens we take, any advantage in projected play that Cutler holds over Moore is slight. He missed time a year ago with a sprained right thumb and a labrum injury that required season-ending right shoulder surgery in December, but said he’s healthy now and confident his arm will be fine. Despite having his final season in Chicago cut short, Gase is confident that the 34-year-old quarterback is a fit in Miami.
He’s already taken a ton of snaps against the Vikings in his career, but not at U.S. Bank Stadium. I know the system.
The fourth and final preseason game is nearly always a showcase of younger players battling for the final few roster spots and the practice squad. It’s only day one for Cutler being on the job, but watching him play the position should give Dolphins fans confidence that there are now two healthy veterans ready to step up to the challenge. She added, “And I’m just excited for this new career”.
