Jays starter Boyd leaves without recording an out
The Toronto Blue Jays have recalled Felix Doubront from AAA Buffalo, and manager John Gibbons says that the left-hander may start in Matt Boyd’s slot on July 7th against the Chicago White Sox.
Red Sox starter Wade Miley (W, 8-7) made the Boston faithful hold their rejoices, however, showing signs of a potential breakdown in the second inning.
Dave Stieb is the only other Blue Jays pitcher to face seven batters without recording an out. This was especially painful after the Jays lost a challenge earlier in the inning to Boston when catcher Russell Martin was ruled out by the replay crew after initially being called safe at first.
Boston Red Sox’s David Ortiz celebrates his three run home run…
“It’s good man”, said slugger David Ortiz, whose three-run homer broke things open in the first. Alejandro De Aza, who has been a pleasant surprise since being acquired last month from the Baltimore Orioles, continued to swing a hot bat with three hits (single, double, triple) and four RBIs, extending his hit streak to eight games. He has won five of his past six starts against Boston, dating to 2013, and has a 1.63 ERA in the six wins.
In the fifth, the Red Sox caught a break. Rookie Devon Travis followed with another single, but Betts came up throwing and nailed Danny Valencia at the plate on a close call that was reviewed. Baseball’s best team against left-handed pitching tried to make a game out of it in the second by batting around against Red Sox starter Wade Miley and scoring four runs. Sandoval started the inning with a single. “We made a little bit of a run and we had guys on base all night long, we were just missing that one big, big hit”.
Farrell said De Aza could platoon with Shane Victorino in right once Victorino (left calf) comes off the DL, which could happen Friday.
In the game the Jays managed 14 hits, but stranded 13 runners, an anomaly in this year of offensive excellence for the Jays. “They were hitting everything he threw up there”. He’s thrown 48 innings, allowed 36 hits, 1 home run, 18 walks with 43 strikeouts.
The Sox tacked on three more in the seventh inning and another in the eighth as Betts (3-for-6), Holt (4-for-6) and Bogaerts (4-for-6) combined for 11 hits. The Blue Jays disagreed and manager John Gibbons was ejected.NOTES: The Red Sox activated C Ryan Hanigan (fractured right hand) from the disabled list and optioned RHP Jonathan Aro to Triple-A Pawtucket…. The Red Sox average 3.1 walks per game, making them one of the most disciplined teams in the AL. On June 20, they were ten games out.
Miley was not sharp, walking a season-high seven, but he gutted out five innings to earn the victory on what Farrell termed, “a blue-collar night”. In the second inning, he escaped a bases loaded jam, although it was not unscathed. “And a trip that we needed to claw our way back to within six (games of the lead in the American League East)”. Limiting the damage except for the second was the reason he was able to squeak by. Tommy Layne and Alexi Ogando pitched in relief. Miley’s wildness contributed to the inning with three of his seven walks coming in the frame. Breslow was also shaky, allowing two runs in the ninth in a mop-up role.
Hitting Game Ball Bogaerts/De Aza, A+. Do you see a lot of young pitchers come through here as a member of the Red Sox how is Rodriguez rate.
