Jeb Bush drops out of the Republican race for president
Clinton beat Sanders by a slim margin in Iowa, but Sanders surprised pundits and experts with a handily win in the New Hampshire primary. The GOP holds its caucus in Nevada on Tuesday, while Democrats face off in SC on February 27.
The Republican presidential candidate plans to be back in SC later Saturday to await the results. During his victory speech Saturday, Trump did not mention or offer any good wishes for Bush. “This is a special night”. “We love you, Jeb!” a man yelled, beginning a round of applause and chants of “Jeb!”
A battle for second place was unfolding between Texas Sen. But Bush has competition on that front, chiefly from Marco Rubio and John Kasich. “Gov. Bush has many things to be proud of”, Rubio said. His reply was met with laughs from supporters, including South Carolina Republican Sen.
“Voters want to change the way DC functions”, Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski said, “and the only way to do that is to elect Donald Trump”. He said it was up for the next President to do that.
Trump appeared confident as he’s traveled the state, holding rallies and town halls that have drawn thousands.
SC was a bitter disappointment for Bush, who campaigned alongside members of his famous family, which remains popular in the state.
Jeb Bush says he is ending his bid for the White House. But the 43rd president may not have done enough to rescue his brother Jeb, who is struggling to gain traction.
For some SC is seen as more than just another caucus – with the state famous for having a six-out-of-seven record for picking the Republican nominee.
It’s also a good approximation of the party as a whole. Marco Rubio’s stronger-than-expected second place finish will excite loyalists, and there will be a strong push to try to ensure that he mops up votes from the rest of the field.
Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.), who is supporting Sen. Of the Rubio supporters, 82% are still planning on voting for him, with 8% now intending to vote for Cruz and 4% intending to vote for Trump.
There were plenty of accusations flying between Cruz and Rubio, too.
