Jed Lowrie Traded to Athletics
Lowrie has been traded to the Athletics, Jane Lee of MLB.com reports.
Lowrie, a Stanford graduate who makes his offseason home in Houston, signed a three-year, $23 million deal with the Astros before the 2015 season.
Lowrie, 31, played in Oakland for two years in 2013 and 2014 after spending the first four seasons of his career with the Red Sox.
Overall, he hit for a. 222 average, with nine home runs on the year. The A’s might look to move either Brett Lawrie, who went from third to second base when the A’s claimed Danny Valencia, or they potentially could trade Valencia. In 69 games with the team last season, Lowrie hit an underwhelming. He previously spent two seasons with Oakland, posting a.271/.334/.405 line while slugging 21 homers in 290 games. He was out for 3 months after tearing a ligament in his right thumb.
The veteran infielder will now return to Oakland and join a crowded infield there as well.
Houston received prospect pitcher Brendan McCurry in the deal, as noted above. Oakland will pick up the entirety of his remaining contract, paying a guaranteed $15 million and holding a $6 million option for 2018.
McCurry, 23, was 3-3 with a 1.37 ERA and 29 saves this year with Class A Stockton and Double-A Midland, striking out 82 and walking 17 in 63 innings.
