Jennings debut 50 as England start strongly vs
India posted 62/1 in their first innings in reply to England’s 400 at tea on the second day of the fourth cricket Test match here on Friday.
It was India’s fifth successive test series win, stretching back to Sri Lanka a year ago, followed by home series wins against South Africa and New Zealand and away to the West Indies.
Ashwin, who has won the man-of-the-series awards in each of India’s last four Test series, took his tally to 27 wickets from the four matches against England.
The 24-year-old replaced teenager Haseeb Hameed, who broke his little finger during England’s defeat in the third test in Mohali and returned home to undergo surgery.
The last man to score a hundred on his England Test debut was Jonathan Trott against the Aussies at the Oval in 2009.
Alastair Cook had been heard regretting the fact that his team didn’t “bat big” in the first innings, in the previous two Tests that England lost. “They are world-class spinners but we knew the task ahead of us”, said England bowler James Anderson. Ravindra Jadeja picked two wickets while Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jayant Yadav scalped a wicket apiece.
Cook was more aggressive than normal apparently having taken on board head coach Trevor Bayliss’ desire for the batsmen to try to put pressure on India’s bowlers.
Chris Woakes (0) followed his team-mate to the pavilion after he was bowled by Ashwin, who lured his victim into an attempted drive.
The neat sequence of one success per Ashwin over continued when Adil Rashid was compliant with a flick straight into the hands of deep midwicket.
Ashwin was impressed by England’s debutant but warned – from personal experience – all may not be quite as it seems with a pitch which is already giving him and his fellow spinners significant help. He walked with him down the crease, forcing the umpire to intervene. It was vital for me to get the best out of myself.
“It was a bit of a sour end really, a bit disappointing in terms of how well the spirit between both sides had been”, he added. I’m not joking or trying to be sarcastic.
“I got Root out in that spell but I thought that was one of the better spells of the day and I think I got rewards for it as soon as I came back in the third spell”, he said. “He didn’t use any bad words, honestly”, said the captain.
Kohli flopped during India’s 3-1 series defeat in England in the summer of 2014, making a total of only 134 runs over 10 innings and mustering a top score of just 39.
The Englishman opened the innings with skipper Alastair Cook.
“Ashwin’s a really good bowler”.
The match witnessed an all-round performance from the Indian side. They were less than 50-50 so we have to give it to them.
“I have always been a handy batsman, ever since started playing in junior cricket”.
