Jens Lehmann: The player Arsenal need to win Premier League title
Former Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann has told Goal.com he believes Petr Cech will bounce back from his unconvincing debut against West Ham.
The Gunners snapped up Cech earlier in the summer in an £11 million deal from Chelsea, which was a great piece of business by Arsene Wenger’s team.
Charlie Nicholas believes that Arsenal were over confident heading into the Premier League opener against West Ham United, resulting in their 2-0 defeat.
Cech misjudged Dimitri Payet’s free-kick to allow Cheikhou Kouyate to put the Hammers ahead before he was beaten by Mauro Zarate at his near post from 20 yards.
“But sometimes it takes a while to adapt to a new club, particularly when you are coming from a major rival like Chelsea“.
But despite being “surprised” by Cech’s display, Lehmann thinks the 33-year-old will go on to have a “fantastic season“. It takes time.
“I’ve always said that when you’re too young, you shouldn’t play for a big club when they need you to win something”, said Lehmann.
Szczesny will become Roma’s first-choice at the Stadio Olimpico and hope to rebuild his faltering career in the hope that one day he could return to Arsenal a better player and make a positive impact. “He will give confidence to the whole team, but of course he has to perform”.
New signing Petr Cech was at fault for the two goals but the Arsenal backline did not escape without criticism after a lacklustre display on home soil.
The goalkeeper however has retained his place for Arsenal’s game with Crystal Palace today.
