Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May to host new motoring show
Jeremy Clarkson will premiere a new auto show on Amazon Prime following his exit from the BBC series earlier this year.
Signing the hosts, who separated from the BBC when Clarkson’s contract was not renewed after he punched a producer, is considered a huge win for Amazon over rivals like Netflix (NFLX).
They will also reunite with Top Gear executive producer Andy Wilman, who’s producing the show.
“I feel like I’ve climbed out of a bi-plane and into a spaceship”, Clarkson remarked in the release.
May joked: “We have become part of the new age of smart TV”. Ironic, isn’t is?’ quipped James May.
The always colorful Clarkson wasn’t shy about boasting of his new deal with Amazon, which he heavily implied was a much sweeter arrangement than the one he had with the BBC.
Jay Marine, Vice president of Amazon Prime Video EU, confirmed the show will go into production shortly before airing exclusively on Amazon Prime in 2016.
“Amazon beat out Netflix Inc. and major broadcasters in the bidding for the group’s new show”, WSJ reports, quoting one source saying: “We’ve never seen a horse race like this”. I have already been there. It is planning a new series to be presented by British TV and radio personality Chris Evans. Prime members in the U.S., Japan, Austria and Germany should get the new show as well as the company talks about a “global TV deal”.
“I’ve got a job”, Hammond tweeted.
A Top Gear television crew was forced to flee Argentina after driving a Porsche 928 GT with the registration number H982 FKL, which some people suggested could have referred to the Falklands conflict. Amazon may license the yet-to-be-named show to video providers in countries where the service is not available.
Clarkson left “Top Gear“, which has an audience estimated at more than 350 million in 214 territories worldwide, in March.
