Jeremy Clarkson’s Top Gear replacement allegedly to be called ‘Gear Knobs’
The former Top Gear trio of Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond announced they had signed a new deal, reportedly worth millions, with Amazon Prime earlier this year.
The ex-BBC presenter’s lawyers have registered the innuendo-laden title as a trademark covering a variety of products “relating to motoring or motor vehicles”.
They used a similar scheme to set up company Bedder 6 Ltd, which was in charge of Top Gear’s lucrative merchandising revenue.
The various registrations reserve the right to use the words on merchandise, as well as in broadcasting and publishing.
Amazon announced in July that its streaming service, Amazon Prime, has commissioned the trio to make a brand new motoring show in a deal which the company’s CEO Jeff Bezos later described as “very, very, very expensive”.
The variant “Gear Nobs” was also registered, along with “Speedbird“, which could be some sort of Stig-esque character or regular segment.
“The main thing that is happening now is conceptualising the new show, and getting a title”.
The competition between the new show and Chris Evans’ revamped Top Gear is hotly anticipated, as it is not known whether current fans will stick with the old line-up or transfer their loyalties to Evans.
A source told the paper: “Chris wants to do the shows live, but executives are anxious about what might pop out of the presenters’ mouths”. We don’t comment on rumour and speculation’.
