Jeremy Mathieu to Arsenal: Gunners make enquiry over Barcelona defender
The summer transfer window is in full swing so we’ll bring you all the latest transfer rumours and gossip from around the globe.
Debuchy has today however been linked by Il Tempo with a move to Italian side AS ROMA, although it’s unknown whether such move would be on a permanent or loan basis.
According to French news outlet SFR Sport, Arsene Wenger is keen to make a move for the French worldwide, and is reportedly interested in utilising the player’s ability to play in both central defence or as a full-back.
Mathieu joined Barca from Valencia in July 2014 for a reported €20m and has made 49 La Liga appearances for the Blaugrana.
The Gunners are in need of another centre back following injuries to Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista.
According to The Sun, the Frenchman could now fill that void, with the Gunners hitting a huge stumbling block in their bid to sign Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi, with his father dismissing the transfer talk and insisting that his alleged agent isn’t his representative.
However, his position as first choice defender has been put in to jeopardy after the arrivals of Samuel Umtiti and Lucas Digne from Lyon and Paris St-Germain respectively, and could look to find first team football elsewhere. Mathieu has plenty of experience in Spain since arriving at Valencia in 2009 and would be a useful addition considering the shortage of centre-backs at Arsenal.
